Building a connected marine sector

MIIN brings together organisations working across Ireland’s ocean economy, including offshore energy, seafood, maritime transport, marine technology, and research. It has grown into a national network of over 280 member organisations across industry, academia, and government.
  • collaboration across marine and maritime sectors
  • stronger links between industry, research, and policy
  • increased visibility of Ireland’s marine capability
  • engagement with national and international opportunities

Transitioning to an industry-led cluster

MIIN is evolving from a network to a formal, industry-led marine cluster.

This transition will:

  • strengthen governance and industry leadership
  • provide dedicated services and coordination for members
  • support long-term, sustainable growth of the sector

This reflects a broader strategic aim to deliver structured supports to marine and coastal enterprise and strengthen industry coordination mechanisms.

Recent progress includes:

  • establishing transition governance and industry working groups
  • developing a formal company structure and governance model
  • securing early industry commitment and seed funding

These steps will help position MIIN as a sustainable, enterprise-led national cluster. Learn more about the transition and its supporting analysis in the Marine Ireland Industry Network feasibility study.

Marine Ireland Industry Network Feasibility Study

The study assessed MIIN’s current performance and explored its potential evolution into a formal cluster organisation, among other possibilities.

The study included desk-based research, collaborative workshops, and one-to-one consultations. A joint Marine Institute / Enterprise Ireland Feasibility Study Working Group oversaw the process. The Cluster Centre undertook most of the study throughout 2025.

It examined Ireland’s marine economy, stakeholder engagement, international benchmarks, and options for structured cluster development. This work culminated in strategic recommendations for MIIN’s future.

The final report was delivered in November 2025.

Funding the feasibility study

The Marine Institute secured funding through Enterprise Ireland following a successful Stream 4 Feasibility Grant application under the Smart Regions Enterprise Innovation Scheme. The funding helped the Marine Institute and Enterprise Ireland consider the future direction of the Marine Ireland Industry Network. The study is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Northern & Western Regional Programme 2021-2027.
