Sustainability across our operations

We are focused on decarbonising infrastructure and equipment. A solar-powered marine data buoy supports observations for research and forecasting.

Our decarbonisation programme

Most of our energy use is associated with operating our research vessels and running our headquarters laboratory facility. Our programme focuses on four connected areas.

Energy management

Through energy-management procedures, we monitor, manage, and continually improve energy use at our headquarters and on our research vessels.

Renewable energy

We are investing in renewable energy at our Oranmore facility, including planned ground-mounted and carport solar systems.

Cleaner fuels

We are transitioning our research vessels from marine gas oil to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil to reduce emissions.

People and culture

Training, awareness days, and regular progress updates help make sustainability part of our organisational culture.

Leadership and accreditation

The Chief Executive Officer, Dr Rick Officer, is our Sustainability Champion. Patricia Orme, Director of Corporate Services, is our Energy Performance Officer.

Our laboratories are My Green Lab accredited, and the organisation holds ISO 50001 energy-management certification.
