2025 highlights

Six areas illustrate the scale and range of the Marine Institute’s work during 2025.

Science and advice for decision-making

We provide scientific analysis, advice, and specialist knowledge across sustainable fisheries, seafood safety, environmental monitoring, marine spatial planning, offshore renewable energy, aquaculture, climate-change monitoring, and Ireland’s blue economy.

Climate, biodiversity, and seafood security

Work includes long-term sea-temperature records at Malin Head, marine climate projects, and sentinel observatories at Mace Head, Lehanagh Pool, and Lough Furnace.

Research and innovation

In 2025, our competitive Marine Research Funding Programme invested €12 million through new calls and awards. The report notes 135 new and existing project awards.

Digital ocean data

The public benthos monitoring dataset contains more than 4,000 sampling events and records covering 2,466 species across the Irish coastline.

Supporting Ireland’s blue economy

Our work covers seafood, offshore renewable energy, and maritime transport. Ireland’s Ocean Economy report covers 13 ocean-based industries.

Public engagement and ocean literacy

Education, outreach, and European Maritime Day connected people with marine science. European Maritime Day activities engaged over 12,000 members of the public and 1,200 delegates.

“This report gives a snapshot of the extraordinary scope of our work, and shows how the expertise, innovation and commitment of our teams translate into meaningful impacts across Ireland and internationally.”
