Advanced Mapping Services
Advanced Mapping Services is part of the Marine Institute’s Ocean Science and Information Services division. Our team carries out hydrographic, geophysical, and habitat mapping and implements the INFOMAR Data Exchange, Integration, and Value-Added programmes.
Value-Added Programmes
EMODnet
Through our partnership with the European Marine Observation and Data Network, funded by EMFAF, we provide seabed-habitat maps for citizen science and operational EU marine data services.
Barbados Marine Spatial Plan
We support the Barbados Government’s Marine Spatial Planning team in mapping the Barbados Exclusive Economic Zone. The partnership supports blue-economy development, environmental protection, maritime safety, research, and education.
SeaRover
SeaRover ran from 2017–2019 and established a baseline biological dataset for Annex 1 Reef Habitats. Three offshore survey legs delivered 60 days of ROV imaging, 154 ROV transects, and more than 330 biological samples.
SeaShelf
This 2023–2027 project extends benthic-habitat mapping beyond Irish coastal waters and offshore reef habitats. It supports seabed-integrity assessments, Marine Spatial Planning, future MPA designations, and nature-restoration efforts.

SeaRover Synthesis data
The SeaRover Synthesis Project processed survey information into products that support decision-making.

INFOMAR is Ireland’s national seabed-mapping programme, jointly delivered by the Marine Institute and Geological Survey Ireland. Since 2006, we have used advanced multibeam sonar systems to measure seabed depth, sediment type, and biological features.
Access INFOMAR data
Ireland’s seabed-mapping effort is brought together in the Real Map of Ireland, a high-resolution picture of what lies beneath Ireland’s waters.
We make this data resource widely and openly available on an ongoing basis. Access data and mapping products on the INFOMAR website.
