Our role in GO-SHIP
We contribute to the Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program. Measurements of temperature, salinity, carbon, nutrients, and other variables provide reliable datasets for studying ocean circulation, biogeochemical processes, and climate regulation.
The A02 GO-SHIP line
The A02 section is a transatlantic hydrographic line from Europe to North America. We reoccupy it about once per decade to detect long-term ocean change.
- high-precision hydrographic data, including temperature, salinity, oxygen, and currents
- carbon-system measurements to assess uptake and acidification
- nutrients and tracers for circulation studies
- data for calibrating autonomous observing systems
Why repeat A02 observations matter
- ocean heat-content trends
- large-scale circulation variability
- changes in ocean carbon storage
- climate variability and long-term change

Annual ocean climate cruise
We run the Ocean Climate Cruise each year in the Northeast Atlantic, complementing decadal surveys with sustained observations in a key climate region.
Each cruise collects full-depth hydrographic profiles alongside carbon and biogeochemical data. These high-quality time-series datasets track variability in water masses and ocean circulation.
This approach improves temporal resolution while maintaining the data quality needed for climate research.
