A long-term Atlantic salmon dataset

The programme provides one of Ireland’s longest-running experimental datasets on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stock performance. Researchers use it to study survival, exploitation, and population dynamics at national and North Atlantic scales.

Development of the ranched stock

Releases of reared smolts originating from Burrishoole grilse began in 1956. By 1964, sufficient adult returns had established a self-sustaining breeding population.

This led to the line-bred Burrishoole ranched stock, maintained through controlled breeding of returning adults.

Stock characteristics

Together, these traits make the Burrishoole stock a valuable model for studying salmon population dynamics and stock-enhancement outcomes.

Marine survival

The stock has high marine survival rates relative to other Irish ranched stocks.

Returns to coastal waters

Returning adults show strong return rates to coastal waters.

Performance beyond Burrishoole

The stock performs consistently when released at locations outside the Burrishoole system.

Monitoring individuals and cohorts

An integrated system combines fish-trapping infrastructure, rod-fishery data collection, smolt microtagging, and adult tag recovery. This approach tracks individuals and cohorts across life stages.

Key data outputs

The programme collects these long-term datasets consistently and at high resolution, enabling robust scientific analysis.

Marine survival to the coast

The dataset records marine survival rates as salmon return to coastal waters.

Fishery exploitation

The dataset measures exploitation rates in commercial and recreational fisheries.

Spawning escapement

The dataset records returning adults that reach their spawning grounds.

Contribution to stock assessment

The Burrishoole system is a core component of Ireland’s salmon monitoring framework.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) uses programme data to:

  • assess the status of Irish salmon stocks annually;
  • inform management advice for the North Atlantic; and
  • support international comparisons of stock performance.

Burrishoole is recognised as a key index system for Atlantic salmon in the North Atlantic region.

Research applications

The dataset supports research into:

  • stock–recruitment relationships;
  • the effects of marine survival variability;
  • fishery exploitation dynamics; and
  • the evaluation of enhancement and ranching strategies.

Its long-term continuity makes it particularly valuable for detecting trends and responses to environmental change.
