Marine pollution in Irish waters

We monitor pollution in Irish marine waters to protect ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Pollution can come from land or sea and travel long distances before reaching our coasts. By tracking these pollutants, we help ensure our seas remain clean and sustainable for future generations.

How pollutants reach the sea

Human activities on land and at sea introduce pollutants into the marine environment. These can enter the ocean in different ways, including:
  • direct discharges, such as industrial releases or accidental spills
  • rivers and surface runoff carrying contaminants from land
  • atmospheric deposition, where pollutants travel through the air

How we monitor marine pollution

We work with organisations such as the Environmental Protection Agency and government departments to monitor pollution across Irish waters. Our monitoring programmes focus on:

  • water quality in coastal and shellfish areas
  • priority substances in estuarine and coastal waters
  • nutrient levels in coastal waters
  • long-term trends of pollutants
  • contamination in sediments and marine life

Supporting regulations and programmes

Our monitoring supports national and international commitments, including:
  • Water Framework Directive (WFD)
  • Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)
  • OSPAR Convention for the protection of the North-East Atlantic

Research and innovation

We carry out research to better understand marine pollution and improve monitoring methods. Key research areas include:
  • how pollutants behave and move in the environment
  • the impact of contaminants on marine ecosystems
  • new monitoring and detection technologies

Why this work matters

Marine pollution poses risks to biodiversity, ecosystem health, and marine resources. By monitoring and researching pollutants, we can:
  • protect marine life and habitats
  • support sustainable use of marine resources
  • inform policy and environmental management

Work with us

If you use ocean data, we can help you access datasets, understand results, or collaborate on research.
