Evidence for marine policy and planning
We work with national and international partners across government departments, agencies, and research organisations.
- provide robust data and analysis for decision-making
- support marine planning and governance
- assess social and economic impacts at national, regional, and local levels
Understanding Ireland’s ocean economy
We measure jobs and economic activity across marine sectors. Our work covers annual reporting across 13 marine industries, economic modelling, trends, dashboards, and marine business directories. References: Ireland’s ocean economy data and reports.
Supporting coastal communities
We analyse interactions between the ocean and coastal economies, including how marine sectors support local livelihoods.
- analyse socio-demographic trends and regional differences
- develop community-level data and profiles
- fund research on coastal and fisheries-dependent communities
Valuing marine ecosystems
We carry out and fund research that assesses the value marine ecosystems provide to society, including food, recreation, and climate regulation.

Research and public insights
We commission and carry out research to understand how people value the ocean and how marine activities affect society.
- research public perception and ocean awareness, including MASTS
- contribute to the WIN-BIG project, which gathers evidence on women’s participation in Europe’s blue economy, identifies skills gaps, and develops capacity-building and networking activities for inclusion and career progression. Learn more: WOMEN IN BLUE ECONOMY | WIN_BIG
