Supporting sustainable growth

We support the growth of Ireland’s blue bioeconomy across sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, and marine biotechnology. Our work helps researchers, industry, and policymakers make informed decisions and deliver sustainable outcomes.

What is the blue bioeconomy?

The blue bioeconomy uses aquatic-based resources sustainably and innovatively to create food, materials, and economic value. It includes fisheries, aquaculture, seaweed, biotechnology, and bio-based products. For Ireland, it offers opportunities to support coastal communities, drive innovation, contribute to climate and sustainability goals, and protect marine ecosystems.

How we support the sector

Our role spans research, funding, and collaboration, providing the evidence and connections needed for informed decision-making.

Research and innovation

We support national and international work across fisheries sustainability, seafood innovation, seaweed value chains, and marine bioproducts.

Funding and partnerships

We connect stakeholders with funding opportunities, including European partnerships and national programmes, and guide them on effective engagement.

Marine data and research infrastructure

We generate and manage marine data and support access to research infrastructure. This helps stakeholders assess opportunities, reduce risk, and plan activities using robust evidence.

From science to application

A key part of our work is translating complex science into practical insight. We work closely with researchers, industry, and public bodies so ideas can be tested, developed, and applied in real-world settings. These ideas range from sustainable fisheries practices to new bio-based products.

Connecting people and shaping policy

We bring together industry, academia, and government to support collaboration and reduce fragmentation across the blue bioeconomy. We also help position Irish stakeholders within European and international initiatives.

At a national level, we contribute to the Irish Bioeconomy Forum and the Bioeconomy Implementation and Development Group. This work helps align research, policy, and industry priorities and supports the delivery of Ireland’s bioeconomy strategy.
