Wave observations around Ireland

We operate a network of wave buoys that provides high-resolution observations of conditions around Ireland in real time.

Supporting marine renewable energy

The network provides observations that support marine renewable-energy work and offshore operations.
  • measure wave height and energy
  • provide real-time conditions for offshore operations
  • support testing and development of wave energy devices

High-resolution wave observations

Wave buoys continuously measure wave height, wave period, and wave energy. The observations provide:
  • high-frequency time-series data
  • insight into Ireland’s wave climate
  • validation data for ocean and wave models

Understanding wave conditions

Wave buoys give researchers a live view of offshore sea conditions. This allows them to:
  • see how large waves are
  • track changes in sea state
  • understand how conditions vary around the coast
