Part of Ireland’s ocean observation system

We monitor sea level and tidal patterns along Ireland’s coastline through the Irish National Tide Gauge Network (INTGN). Its measurements and predictions support research, planning, and the safe use of coastal areas.

INTGN links coastal data with offshore and shoreline measurements. Together, these observations show how ocean conditions develop and affect the coast.

Coastal sea level monitoring

INTGN has 19 tide gauge stations along the Irish coast. Every station measures sea level, tidal cycles, and harmonic behaviour. Some stations also measure sea temperature and atmospheric pressure.

High-resolution datasets

Data is recorded every five minutes, providing:
  • continuous time series
  • high temporal resolution
  • near real-time availability

How tide gauge data is used

INTGN observations support scientific work, coastal planning, and public understanding of changing conditions.

Research and modelling

High-frequency observations support tidal analysis, modelling, coastal process research, and long-term sea level monitoring.

Forecasting and coastal planning

Sea level and tidal information supports storm surge and flood forecasting. It also helps people plan beach trips, boating, and fishing around changing conditions.

Coastal reporting and stories

The observations provide context for coastal flooding, storm surge events, extreme tides, weather impacts, community risks, and climate and sea level stories.

Global sea level observation (GLOSS)

We contribute to the Global Sea Level Observing System through:
  • stations at Howth Harbour and Union Hall
  • multiple sensors at the stations
  • GNSS systems that measure land movement and help distinguish sea level rise from vertical land motion

Access the data

INTGN data includes real-time sea level measurements, tidal predictions, and downloadable datasets.
