Collaboration between scientists and fishers
Fishers provide data and practical insight for scientific assessments. Scientists maximise the value of this information so assessments can inform sustainable fishery management decisions.
The Irish Fisheries Science Research Partnership
- strengthen collaboration between fisheries scientists and the fishing industry
- improve mutual understanding of scientific advice and industry realities
- identify and prioritise fisheries research needs
- support the long-term sustainability and viability of Ireland’s fishing sector
How the partnership works
The partnership includes Federation of Irish Fishermen industry representatives and scientists from the Marine Institute and Bord Iascaigh Mhara.
Members meet regularly to discuss research projects, assessment results, and research priorities. The partnership has also established initiatives including industry-science conferences and surveys.
What the partnership recognises
Effective fisheries science combines scientific assessment with knowledge from people working in the fishing industry.
Good-quality scientific data
Scientists need reliable information to assess fish stocks and support fisheries advice.
Practical fishing knowledge
Fishers contribute experience and access to real-world data from fishing activity.
Shared fisheries decisions
Supporting effective fisheries management
- making science practical and grounded in real fishing conditions
- giving fishers a direct role in shaping the science that affects their livelihoods
- supporting evidence-based policy decisions, including quotas and conservation measures
- helping deliver a sustainable and economically viable fishing industry in Ireland
