About the IMDO
The Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO) is the statutory body responsible for promoting and developing Ireland’s maritime sector. It operates as part of the Marine Institute and focuses on:
- ports and port services
- shipping and shipping services
- related maritime industries
What we do
The IMDO operates under the aegis of the Department of Transport. Its role includes advising the Minister on maritime policy and supporting national policy objectives across five key areas.
Policy advice
Supporting the development of national maritime policy.
Business development
Promoting Ireland as a location for maritime activity.
EU funding and advisory services
Helping organisations access funding and navigate EU programmes.
Market research
Providing data, insights, and analysis on the maritime sector.
Education and training
Supporting skills development and workforce capability.
Supporting the maritime sector
The maritime industry is closely linked with other strategic sectors, including:
- offshore renewable energy
- maritime digitalisation
- alternative fuels
- cruise tourism
Working with government, industry, and academia, the IMDO provides:

Legislative role
- promoting and supporting the development of Irish shipping, shipping services, and seafarer training
- engaging with and supporting the shipping and maritime services sector
- advising the Minister for Transport on policy development and coordination to support employment and growth
- implementing maritime policy as directed by the Minister
- advising on policy related to ports and port services, and carrying out assigned functions
