How monitoring supports licensing advice
As part of the aquaculture licensing process, the Marine Institute provides scientific and technical advice to the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine (DAFM) on the possible impacts of aquaculture activities on marine bird species.
- Advice covers seabirds such as Atlantic Puffin and Northern Gannet, and waders such as Grey Plover and Bar-tailed Godwit.
- Ornithological monitoring surveys take place annually in several coastal bays where aquaculture occurs.
- The Marine Institute holds data for Trawbreaga Bay, Poulnasherry Bay, Tralee Bay, Castlemaine Harbour, Dungarvan Bay, Tramore Harbour, Bannow Bay, Ballyteigue Bay, and Carlingford Lough.
